If we go back and unearth the history of Dosmochey, we come to know that it was started by the rulers of Ladakh. It is celebrated in the 12th month of the Tibetan calendar. This year it will be celebrated on 2nd and 3rd February. Leh Dosmochey is the most famous one of the three and monks from different monasteries perform the mask dance turn by turn. A scared traditional mask dance is performed during the festival and the ritual offerings such as idols prepared from dough are burnt. The significance of Dosmochey is to keep evil spirits at bay and to bring in peace, harmony, and happiness for the year. On the two-day festival, Leh market is filled with stalls at discounted rates and people engaged in various games.
